NBA Rumor: Dallas Mavs ‘Resume’ Tim Hardaway Jr. Trade Search
The Dallas Mavericks are ramping up efforts to trade veteran guard Tim Hardaway Jr., as reported by NBA insider Marc Stein. With one year remaining on his contract, the Mavericks are committed to finding a new home for the 32-year-old sharpshooter.
“League sources say that the Mavericks will promptly resume their long-running search for a trade partner to take Hardaway on, which is more likely than ever to come to fruition with the 32-year-old now entering the final season of his current contract and with his salary declining from $17.9 million in 2023-24 to $16.2 million in 2024-25,” Stein wrote in his recent newsletter.
This move aligns with the Mavericks’ broader strategy to reshape their roster. General Manager Nico Harrison has prioritized re-signing Derrick Jones Jr., who excelled on a minimum contract last season. Harrison emphasized that retaining Jones is “priority 1A and 1B” for Dallas this offseason. Trading Hardaway would provide the financial flexibility needed to retain Jones and make other roster improvements.
Hardaway joined the Mavericks in a 2019 trade from the New York Knicks. He has averaged more than 15 points per game during his time with the team and became the first Maverick to record multiple 200-plus three-point shot seasons, achieving this feat three times. His sharpshooting was on full display in the 2024 NBA Finals, where he made five three-pointers in a historic fourth-quarter performance in Game 4.
As the offseason progresses, Mavericks fans will be watching closely to see where Hardaway lands and what the team gets in return. While his tenure with Dallas may be coming to an end, the focus now shifts to how the Mavericks can leverage this move to strengthen their roster for another championship push next season.
