Seth Curry On Klay Thompson’s Transition to Mavericks: 'He’ll Figure It Out'
As Klay Thompson prepares for his first season with the Dallas Mavericks, former Maverick Seth Curry shared his thoughts on the sharpshooter's transition from the Golden State Warriors to the Lone Star State. Speaking to NBC Sports Bay Area at the American Century Championship golf tournament, Curry highlighted the potential challenges Thompson might face in his new role.
"It's going to be a little adjustment for Klay, playing with Luka and Kyrie – and not in that Steph system, playing with [Curry] and Draymond [Green]," Curry remarked, pointing out the stark differences in playing styles between Thompson's former and new teammates.
The contrast couldn't be more apparent. In Golden State, Thompson thrived alongside Stephen Curry, whose frenetic, constant movement off the ball created countless opportunities. Now, he'll be sharing the court with Luka Doncic, known for his deliberate, clock-eating possessions, and Kyrie Irving, whose playstyle differs significantly from the Warriors' system.
Curry, who played 100 games with Doncic in Dallas, understands the unique challenges of adapting to the Slovenian superstar's rhythm. The change from being part of the "Splash Brothers" to potentially the third option in Dallas's offense will require Thompson to adjust his game.
Despite the anticipated hurdles, Curry expressed confidence in Thompson's ability to adapt.
"Klay is a basketball player; he's a hooper," Curry said. "He'll figure it out, and I'm sure he'll have a great time there and win a lot of games."
The former Maverick also touched on the emotional aspect of seeing Thompson in a different uniform.
"It doesn't feel right, seeing Klay in that Mavericks uniform wearing 31," Curry admitted. "But let's hopefully see Klay in a different uniform, back to being happy doing what he does. I know he's got a lot of years left to give to the game."
As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how quickly Thompson can acclimate to his new role and how effectively he can complement Doncic and Irving. If Seth Curry's assessment is correct, Mavs fans might soon witness a reinvigorated Klay Thompson lighting up the scoreboard at the American Airlines Center.
