New Ownership Perks? Mavericks to Hold Training Camp in Las Vegas
The Dallas Mavericks went through several changes last season, both on and off the court.
Not only did they transform their roster into being an NBA Finals participant with the trade additions of P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, but longtime Mavs owner Mark Cuban also sold his majority share of the team to the Adelson/Dumont family, effectively taking a step back from being involved in front office decisions.
All of those moves have worked out great for the Mavs so far, but the latter might have even more perks for players going forward given where new team governor Patrick Dumont lives.
“I'm told that the Mavericks are aiming to hold a healthy portion of their training camp in Las Vegas in early October after conducting the usual Media Day that every NBA team stages locally on Sept. 30,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote in his latest newsletter.
“Vegas, of course, is home for new Mavericks majority owner Patrick Dumont, who doubles as Sands Corp. president and COO.”
Several Mavericks, including Dereck Lively II, Naji Marshall, Jaden Hardy, Quentin Grimes and GM Nico Harrison, have already been hanging out in Las Vegas to support Dallas’ NBA Summer League team, and they most certainly won’t complain about having to make one more stop there before the 2024-25 season gets underway.
Last season, the Mavs kickstarted their chemistry-building in Abu Dhabi, where they played two preseason games before returning to Dallas to start the year. We’ll see if they can spark that same kind of chemistry starting much closer to home in Las Vegas this time around.
