NBA Summer League WATCH: Mavs Rookie Melvin Ajinca Posterizes Celtics

Young French prospect Melvin Ajinca showed why the Dallas Mavericks were intrigued with his potential when they drafted him at No. 51 in this year's NBA Draft.

Although expectations aren't usually high for NBA Draft picks in the 50s, the Dallas Mavericks still saw something in 20-year-old French prospect Melvin Ajinca, who was selected with the No. 51 pick in this year's draft.

The 6-8 forward with 3-and-D potential was pegged as being a potential first-round pick in April by DraftExpress.com before his stock started falling. Although Ajinca has struggled with his efficiency during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, his relentless energy and effort have still been on full display, which is what you want to see from a young player getting his first real taste of NBA action.

During the Mavs' 101-90 Summer League win over the Boston Celtics on Friday afternoon, Ajinca got the Cox Pavilion crowd excited with a big-time poster dunk in transition.

Unfortunately for Ajinca, that was just one of only three made shots for him, as he put up seven points in 21 minutes while shooting 3-9 from the floor and 1-5 from deep. Through four Summer League games, he's averaging 8.3 points while shooting 33.3 percent from the floor and 21.1 percent from deep.

Those numbers aren't great, but Ajinca has still shown numerous flashes of the player the Mavs believe he can become in time. One Mavs source tells DallasBasketball.com that Ajinca has been shooting the ball lights out in practices, but it just hasn't translated to the games yet.

If Ajinca can keep his confidence level high and continue to play with relentless energy on both ends of the floor like we've seen in Las Vegas, it's easy to see how he could potentially be competing for rotations minutes in a couple of years from now.
