Mavericks Plan to Sign 'Happy' Kyrie Irving Revealed

With Kyrie Irving thriving in Dallas, the Mavericks are ready to offer a lucrative deal to keep their star guard and leader as part of their championship core.

The Dallas Mavericks have made it clear that Kyrie Irving’s future is a top priority. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reports that the team is prepared to make a substantial financial commitment to retain their star guard.

“They are going to put a big number on the table for him,” MacMahon revealed on The Brian Windhorst's Hoop Collective Podcast, underscoring the organization’s dedication to keeping Irving in Dallas.

The Mavericks’ strategy has been both intentional and effective. “They have demonstrated, ‘We value you and will pay you how much we value you within the ability to have a little bit of wiggle room financially,’” MacMahon noted.

This approach is already yielding results. Irving has been exceptional for Dallas this season, averaging 24.3 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.3 rebounds across 14 games, helping the Mavericks to an 8-7 start. His on-court success reflects a flourishing relationship between player and team.

Irving has a $43.9 million player option for the 2025-26 season, but his performance suggests he could command even more on the open market. Notably, both parties appear committed to a long-term partnership. According to MacMahon, Irving is “extremely happy in Dallas,” and the organization is equally pleased with his impact.

Irving’s value extends beyond his stats.

“He’s the leader of this locker room. That’s unquestioned,” MacMahon emphasized, highlighting the cultural significance of Irving’s presence. His leadership, combined with stellar play and Dallas' success, including its 2024 NBA Finals appearance last season, makes securing Luka Doncic's running mate future a top priority.

Financially, the Mavericks must navigate the NBA’s complex salary cap landscape. With $526,000 in first apron space and $11.9 million in second apron space, retaining Irving will require strategic roster adjustments. However, for a franchise aiming to contend, maintaining a core of Irving, Doncic, and Klay Thompson is a necessary investment.

The mutual satisfaction between Irving and the Mavericks, coupled with the team’s willingness to recognize his value financially, signals a strong likelihood that Irving’s tenure in Dallas will extend well beyond his current contract. As the Mavericks pursue championship aspirations, locking in their star guard is not just a priority—it’s a cornerstone of their long-term strategy.
